Digital inkjet printing emerges as a highly sought-after solution for decorating glass due to its ability to reproduce vibrant full-color images, coupled with the longevity ensured by appropriate glass adhesion promoters. Glass drinkware maintains its enduring popularity across a spectrum of vessels, encompassing pint glasses, beer bottles, wine bottles, various spirit containers, and more. The choice of glass is particularly advantageous given its inert nature, devoid of taste or odor, thus preserving the integrity of beverages and foods stored within. However, achieving optimal adhesion for digitally decorating glass necessitates a pre-treatment process. Several options exist for this pre-treatment, including primer wipes, flame treatment, Pyrosil®, and dedicated pre-treatment systems.

Today, we will explore the latest addition to the pre-treatment systems from Inkcups, the MagiCoat™ Mini. The Inkcups selection expands with a downsized variant of the MagiCoat™ Pre-Treatment System, still utilizing the ever-popular, water-based solution, MagiCoat™. The MagiCoat™ Mini joined the Inkcups offerings in March of 2024.

Digital Inkjet Machines for Glassware

Pre-treatment is the step prior to digitally decorating the drinkware. Once the pre-treatment process is complete, the drinkware can be digitally decorated with a cylindrical inkjet printer, including the Helix® ONE, Helix®, Helix®+, Double Helix® and Revolution®. Another incredibly important aspect of adhesion is UV ink. Digital UV Ink Series are specially formulated for different substrates, for instance, the DL Series UV Ink is specialized for glass.

MagiCoat™ Mini Pre-Treatment System

The MagiCoat™ Mini joins Inkcups pre-treatment options for a complete solution to printing on glass and other materials. With four independently rotating stations, one flaming station, digital vessel temperature monitoring, and fine mist spraying system, the MagiCoat™ Mini Pre-Treament system utilizes MagiCoat™ 3-part solution to achieve optimal adhesion. Glassware is able to withstand up to 200 residential washes and up to 600 industrial washes after pre-treatment.

The MagiCoat™ Mini is a scaled version of the MagiCoat™ Pre-Treatment System, offering a solution for those with lower production demands or limited space.

The process within the MagiCoat™ Mini begins at the flame treating station, where the flame changes the surface energy, eliminating any debris and coatings on the glass. After glassware items are manufactured, they go through a cold end coating process. This cold end coating is in place to ensure the glassware items are not scratched in transit. However, this coating makes it difficult for ink to stick to the surface as well. Once the glassware has been flamed on all sides the vessel visits the fine mist spraying station where it is spray primed with the water-based, glass adhesion promoter, MagiCoat™ solution.

Glass Adhesion Promoter: MagiCoat™ Solution

MagiCoat™ solution is comprised of three parts: A, B, and C, which act as an additional anchor for the UV ink to better adhere to after flame treating. After flaming and after mixing the three parts the MagiCoat™ Glass Primer is sprayed onto glass drinkware.
